Badminton SA headed out to Port Augusta on the 26th of August to complete school clinic at Willsden Primary School and Seaview Christian College.
Whilst in Port Augusta our Development Officer, Callum Dunk, ran a Come N Try session with the Stirling North Badminton Club at Hancock Stadium (otherwise known as 'The Furnace'). We had 15 people attend the session from a variety of age groups, it was a great night
At Willsden Primary School we worked with over 60 students across multiple year levels. At Seaview Christian College we worked with 4 classes across 2 days and worked with a variety of year levels from reception to year 8. There was a total of 67 students at Seaview Christian College.
Then we headed to Whyalla to work with the students at Long Street Primary School for 2 days (29th & 30th of August). We worked with over 250 students ranging from Reception to Year 7, teaching the basic fundamental Badminton skills.
To conclude the trip we hosted at Shuttletime Course at Seaview Christan College (Port Augusta) on the 31st of August. The course was a good way to finish the trip which lasted 6 days.
We will look to do further work with the people of Port Augusta & Whyalla in the near future!

Badminton South Australia is seeking parents and coaches to assist Flinders University researchers, Dr Sam Elliott & Professor Murray Drummond, with a pilot study regarding parental behaviour in youth sport. There is a need to better understand what factors contribute to successful parent and coach relationships in youth sport. This is important because parents and coaches strongly influence psychosocial outcomes developed through youth sport. They also impact participation in, and enjoyment of, youth sport.
Badminton South Australia is sad to announce there will be no school holiday clinics in October this year after successfully launching the school holiday program in July this year. With the Australian Masters Games this October it has been difficult to find suitable times for the clinics.
Badminton SA is extremely pleased with the support of the program since July, we understand some parents and children will be disappointed, we apologise for this; however, we are extremely eager to bring the program back over the summer. The clinics will most likely be in January next year. Make sure you frequently check the Badminton SA website and social media pages for the latest updates.

The Board of Badminton SA would like to pay tribute to Dr Ces Maddern who recently passed away. The CP Maddern Trophy is an important trophy in Australian Badminton.
Here is some background on the CP Maddern Trophy:
Administrators during the 1960’s were concerned at the lack of opportunity for younger players to compete at a national level. Discussions took place between Victoria and Tasmania to establish teams’ competition for Under 17 players. South Australia joined the cause and in 1966 a national competition for teams and individual events began.
Mr C.P. Maddern was Secretary of South Australian Badminton at that time and he donated the perpetual trophy for the national teams’ competition with the expectation and hope that the competition would grow. Eventually all States joined the competition and now it has become International with New Zealand being invited since 2002.
Tasmania won the first official competition in 1966, Western Australia won for the first time in 1975 and New South Wales in 2000, but in the 38 years of the trophy, Victoria has dominated the event, although all States and Territories have been the beneficiaries.
Many Australian players have come through this event, including Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists Lisa Campbell (Bryant), Michael Scandolera and Audrey Tuckey (Swaby), national senior champions and Australian representatives, Cheryl and Sandra Mullett, Paul Tyrrell, Lynne McElroy, Ross Livingston, Geraldine Brown, Sue Oates, Karen Jupp, Linda Best, Darren and Julie McDonald and Olympians Rhonda Cator, Lisa Cambpell, Peter Blackburn, Paul Stevenson and Paul Straight.
The competition has had some changes in age constraints over the years and it became the Australian Under 18 years (later Under 19 years) championship but the purpose has remained – that young people should be encouraged in the sport.
RIP CP Maddern
Please note that the pricing for the schools tournament is different to what has been put on the tournament form. The cost of the first event entered will be $10 and every event entered afterwards is an extra $5 dollars. Max cost for 4 events would be $25.
